Psychotherapy for trauma, attachment and lasting change

EMDR & integrative psychotherapy in Guildford and online across the UK

You may look as though you’re coping well on the outside, while feeling very different underneath.

Perhaps you’re successful in your work but struggle with anxiety, relationships, intimacy or feeling connected to yourself. Perhaps you understand where your difficulties come from, but knowing that hasn’t been enough to change them.

Or perhaps something happened in your past that you thought you’d dealt with, but you still find yourself reacting in ways you don’t fully understand.

Therapy can help you understand those patterns — and, importantly, begin to change them.

I’m Rupert, an experienced integrative psychotherapist specialising in EMDR, attachment trauma and complex developmental trauma. I’ve worked as a psychotherapist since 2014, including more than a decade in specialist addiction and trauma treatment.

I work particularly well with adults who are intelligent, thoughtful and accustomed to managing things themselves, but who have reached a point where their usual ways of coping aren’t working anymore.

When understanding isn’t enough

Many of us can become very good at understanding ourselves.

We can know where our anxiety comes from. We can recognise patterns in our relationships. We can understand how our childhood affected us.

But sometimes insight alone doesn’t create change.

You may still:

        •       become anxious or overwhelmed when relationships become emotionally close
        •       struggle to trust or feel safe with other people
        •       find yourself repeating the same relationship patterns
        •       feel disconnected from your emotions or from other people
        •       experience shame, self-criticism or a sense that you’re never quite enough
        •       become angry, avoidant or withdrawn when you’re under pressure
        •       feel that you’re functioning well but not really enjoying your life
        •       understand your difficulties intellectually while continuing to experience them physically and emotionally

These patterns can be particularly difficult to shift when they developed early in life or are rooted in attachment and trauma.

This is where I can help.

Who I work with

Trauma & attachment

Childhood emotional neglect, attachment difficulties, developmental trauma and the effects of difficult or abusive relationships.

Anxiety & emotional difficulties

Anxiety, shame, emotional overwhelm, low self-worth and difficulties regulating emotions.

Relationships & intimacy

Repeating relationship patterns, difficulty trusting, fear of vulnerability, emotional disconnection and problems with intimacy.

Men’s mental health

I have particular experience working with men who are successful and high-functioning but find it difficult to talk about what is happening underneath the surface.

Addiction & compulsive behaviours

I have extensive experience working with addiction and the underlying emotional and relational difficulties that can contribute to addictive patterns.

What happens next?

Choosing a therapist can feel like a surprisingly big decision.

You don’t have to know exactly what’s wrong or know whether a particular type of therapy is right for you before getting in touch.

I offer an initial conversation where we can discuss what’s bringing you to therapy, what you’re hoping to change and whether I might be the right therapist for you.

There is no obligation to continue.
